Previously, he was a reporter for Gannett News Service in Washington, a political reporter for The Detroit News, state Capitol correspondent for the Staten Island (N.Y.) Advance and editor of the weekly Staten Island Register. Alpert has won several New York state and Michigan Associated Press and Publishers' Association awards.
